Irene Bentley Obituary

Montville - Irene Bentley, 98, daughter of the late Louis and Eliza Grandchamp Sr., died at her home in Uncasville, on Monday, July 15, 2013.

She was born in Quebec, Canada, on Nov. 4, 1914.

On Sept. 12, 1936, she married her beloved Kenneth Bentley at St. John the Evangelist Church in Uncasville. He predeceased her in 1999.

She enjoyed gardening, baking, sewing, and all kinds of needle work. She also volunteered at local convalescent homes, was a member of the Legion of Mary and the Montville Senior Citizens, where she was a former treasurer for a number of years. Her greatest joys in life, however, were serving God and her beloved family.

In 1980, she retired from Lawrence + Memorial Hospital but returned to work part-time until having to retire in 1985 due to her health.

Irene is survived by a daughter, Helene Sage and her husband, Russell, of Uncasville and Florida; her sister-in-law, Gisele of Canada; three nieces, Janet Gifford, Jayne Fawcett, and Judy Cabaness; two nephews, Jeffrey and Lawrence Grandchamp; and several great and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband; her son, Carl; her sister, Rita Schlough; four brothers, Louis Jr., Alfred, Phillip, and Harold Grandchamp.

Her family would like to give their heartfelt thanks to Jeb (Jessica) and Ann Marie from hospice, seeing them every week brought happiness to her heart; to Rachael Lee, Eucharistic minister for her Wednesday visits that allowed her to continue to practice her faith till the very end; and to Stacia for being her friend and companion.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. John the Evangelist Church, Maple Ave., Uncasville, meeting directly at church. Interment will immediately follow at St. Patrick Cemetery. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Center for Hospice Care Southeastern Connecticut, 227 Dunham St., Norwich, CT 06360 - Hospice Building Fund, so all families in this area will have better access to end of life care for their loved ones.
