Irene Chrisoula Sfugaros Phillips of Westridge Rd., New
London died Monday afternoon at New London
Rehabilitation Center in Waterrford.
She was born December 27, 1930 in Derby, the daughter of
Skarlatos and Lena Zachario. Irene was a devoted wife to
her late husband George, who died January 27, 2022.
Irene was a member of St. Sophia Hellenic Orthodox
Church, and very active with the Enosis Philoptocos
Society where she enjoyed baking and working at the
churches Greek Food Festivals.
She is survived by her children, daughter Dorothy
Vamvakides and husband Nick and son Carl Speaks and
wife Donna. Irene was a beloved YiaYia (grandmother) to
her six grandchildren, Kirk, Phillip and Chris Vamvakides
and Shanna, Justin and Sonya Speaks and nine great-
grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by a brother Tony
Sfugaris.
A private funeral liturgy was held at St. Sophia Hellenic
Orthodox Church, with private burial in Cedar Grove
Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to St.
Sophia Hellenic Orthodox Church, 200 Hempstead St.,
