Not sure what to say?

Irving Horowitz remains a grant intellectual figure in the memory of his friends and readers. He helped us, in particular, to understand the atrocities of the Castro regime, but more importantly the atrocities of totalitarian regimes. Jaime Suchlicki

Dear Mary,
I heard today the sad news about Irving's death and I feel so sorry.I want to express my solidarity as I know these are hard times for you, such a good companion you were, as you were always there for him. Although I am very far away in Brazil, I want to express my condolences and to let you know that Irving was a very important person in my life and in my career and I am very grateful for this, Neuma Aguiar ([email protected]).

Dear Mary

I just learned of Irving's passing and wanted to express my condolences. He was quite an interesting guy and I thorughly enjoyed our interactions.

Hope you are doing well.

Sincerely
Tony

I was a student of Irving's at Washington Univ St. Louis in 1964-1966. He saved my cookies in my dissertation oral when I broke down and said I honestly couldn't tell the committee what if anything my dissertation had found out. He eloquently made sense of my work and I passed. Irving was a blustering crude personality, always unsociably loud and scatological. But he had a mind and soul I loved, as did thousands of others. We have lost a major intellectual and spiritual force with the passing...

Mary, I am very sorry to learn of Irving's passing. I am eternally grateful to him for publishing my doctoral dissertation. He honored me with an additional association with Transaction by naming me the book-review editor for Society, which enabled me to interact with him on a frequent basis for several years. Your husband was a giant intellect and a scholar who fearlessly put the the pursuit of truth ahead of any and all ideological constructs. The entire vast field of the Social...

I am very sorry to hear of his passing. He was a tremendous scholar, a powerful writer and a great intellectual force whose impact will be felt for many generations. I was fortunate to meet him when I was in graduate school, and found him to be incredibly kind and supportive to me during my early years in the profession. He will be greatly missed.

I will always remember Irving first as unique among self-made publishers. Beyond his important roles as teacher and writer, he brought thoughtful challenges to the academic world and beyond with great energy and enthusiasm. My best wishes and condolences go to Mary Curtis.

There is so much that can be said about Irving Louis Horowitz (1929-2012). He was a giant, erudite, prolific scholar who --unlike so many others-- kept his feet on the ground, far from the typical intellectual La-laland. He exemplified this by his convincing deconstruction of the many assumptions of Marxism, both the social scientific and the political genres. He was fascinated by Latin American societies and also understood the vicissitudes of life under dictatorships, be them of the...

Irving was the best kind of friend. He had strong opinions, but he was fair. I was one of the many academics who disagreed with him about important things, but he was my publisher for years. My special sympathies to Mary Curtis.
