Dr. Shapiro was born on July 23, 1928 and passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2019. He graduated from high school at age 15 and the University of Western Ontario medical school at 21. He was one of the first Jewish ophthalmology residents at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he met Janet Reinstein, who was an undergraduate at Michigan.
