Heintzelman Funeral Home, Inc. - Schnecksville Obituary

Isaac “Sam” Berger, 88 of Macungie, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2025 at Lehigh Valley Hospital – Cedar Crest. He was the husband of the late June T. (Cohen) Berger. Born in Brooklyn, New York, June 23, 1937, Sam was the son of the late Morris and Mollie (Streitman) Berger.

Sam was a proud graduate of Pratt Institute and enjoyed a long career as a package designer for Avon and Revlon.  Shortly after retiring in 2004, he became June’s right hand man (literally) after she suffered a debilitating stroke.  For thirteen years you’d find him at her side ensuring she received the attention and love she needed while also making it a priority for them to stay connected to their family and friends but most especially to their grandchildren.  He was a gifted artist and a bit of a “foodie”.  He had a deep love for cooking and was known for hosting elaborate dinners, often preparing dishes from treasured recipes he’d collected and refined over the years.  Whether recreating meals from memory or inventing new ones, Sam delighted in bringing people together around the table.  In recent years, he found joy in taking ceramic classes at The Baum School of Art in Allentown where one of his pieces, created in collaboration with grandson Nate, was selected for an art exhibition.  Sam was a talker who loved to tell stories to anyone who would listen.  His favorite subjects included growing up near Coney Island in Brooklyn, spending summers in upstate New York, working – and dining – in NYC, his time spent in the Marine Corps and fishing (but never catching).  Above all else, Sam was a devoted husband, father and grandfather aka “Goppy” who will be missed by all.  He was, without a question, one of a kind.

Sam is survived by his sons, Barry Berger and his wife, Chris of Orefield, Geoffrey Berger and his wife, Tonianne of Myrtle Beach, SC; daughter, Lisa LaGana and her husband, Chris of New Providence, NJ; grandchildren, Nate Berger, Lindsay Berger, Grant Berger, Abby Berger, Thomas LaGana, Lucy LaGana and Molly LaGana.  He is predeceased by 3 siblings.

A celebration of Sam’s life will be held at the convenience of his family. The Heintzelman Funeral Home, Inc., Schnecksville is in charge of arrangements. Online expressions of sympathy may be recorded at www.heintzelmancares.com.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Baum School of Art in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 196 Schnecksville PA 18078-0196.
