Aberdeen, South Dakota
Aberdeen: Isabel "Iz" Riedel, Aberdeen, was born Sept. 12, 1925, to William and Letha (Ewen) Stout in Littleton, Colo.
Iz passed away at her home on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2010, surrounded by her loving family. Schriver's Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 Fifth Ave. N.W, is in charge of arrangements.
In one of her first outings, a train hit their car and Isabel was thrown from the car and landed under the train. Unhurt, she was taken home.
The family moved to Springfield, Ill., shortly after that. The family then moved to Lewiston, Ill., where Isabel was joined by three brothers and one sister. She graduated from high school in Lewiston in 1945. During her high school days, she worked at a bus station and, 45 years later, she could still name every stop between Lewiston and Chicago.
The family returned to the Denver area, where Isabel worked at the American Furniture, in the office. She belonged to a working sorority where, at a social function, she met Duane Riedel, who was attending Denver University. There was a mutual attraction and, five months later, they were joined in marriage.
The couple returned to Aberdeen for the summer, expecting to return to Denver for continuing his education, but the family business needed help, so they stayed in Aberdeen and he worked at Candy Service Co. for 40 years, when they sold the company.
Isabel was blessed by having four children: Marilyn (Roger) Imberi, Barbara (Alan) Peterson, Peggy Sayles and Richard (Keri) Riedel, which gave the couple and continued to give the couple great pride and pleasure.
Isabel was proud and rejoiced in her 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was a member of Chapter AX, PEO, Yellow Brick Road, and Chapter of Questers. She liked to play social card games, whist, bridge, gin and solitaire of many forms.
Isabel was an avid oil painter, her children and many of her friends have paintings with "Iz" in a corner. Isabel enjoyed her association with a painting group at Dacotah Prairie Museum and wanted to continue, but circumstances prevented that from continuing. Isabel and Duane liked to travel, both with their fishing group as well as a couple. They had visited over 30 countries, many several times.
She has asked to be cremated and wants a celebration with food, beverages, music and a time to be upbeat and happy with good memories shared by everyone who wants to do so, but not required to contribute, except by their attendance at the Ward Hotel Ballroom, 104 S. Main St., on Monday, December 6, 2010, at 6 p.m.
She and the family ask that in lieu of flowers, gifts be sent to P.E.O. for students attending Cotty College, the project of P.E.O., North Plains Hospice or the Roadrunners Group that takes handicapped children to the Shriners Hospital.
Isabel will be remembered by her family, friends and acquaintances as a lady always gracious and friendly.
