Loving and devoted father of Nancy Hurwitz, Amy Hurwitz Gutschenritter & her husband David, and Andy (Arthur Andrew) Hurwitz & his wife Julie Zawel. Adoring Poppy of Libby & Matthew Gutschenritter and AJ & Sam Hurwitz. Dear brother of the late Dr. Joshua Hurwitz, Herman Hurwitz and Irene Lappin. And loving Uncle Bud to many nieces and nephews. Dr. Hurwitz practiced Orthopedic Surgery at Marlborough Hospital for over forty years. August 2, 2024

My family lived close to Bud and Eleanor in Sudbury in the mid-60's. My folks became good friends with them and they shared dinners on several occasions (while I babysat my two infant sisters).

My Mum, Lori, had a great and impish sense of humor and, apparently, so did Bud.

During one dinner, baked potatoes wrapped in foil were on the menu. I do not know who started it, but within short order the tinfoil had been balled up and a riotous fight of tinfoil balls ensued, accompanied by much laughter.

On another dinner night my Dad, Alex, had worn a white shirt with buttoned cuffs and collar.

Apparently, a loose thread was spotted by my Mum, Lori, as he passed a serving dish. As soon as his arm was available she snatched the errant thread from his cuff before it wound up in a side dish.

A moment later, Bud said, "Excuse me Alex, but you have a loose thread on your collar."

When my parents arrived home after dinner they were still laughing. Dad walked in the front door wearing his T-shirt and sporting, two white buttoned cuffs and a white button-down collar. Nothing else was left of his white dress shirt, it having succumbed to the piranha, feeding frenzy of thread pullers at the Hurwitz table.

It was sometime later, that Bud performed minor surgery on me at the hospital, while my Mum sat, waiting in the hallway.

After awhile, Bud appeared from the operating room and faced my Mum with a serious look.

"I'm so sorry, Lori. As I was finishing up, I told Chip a funny story and he laughed so hard he split a gut."

Mum broke out in hysterical laughter.

One of the other patients turned to comfort my Mum as she was writhing in laughter. Giggling the whole time, Mum struggled to regain her composure so she could let them in on the joke.

That's the Bud that I recalled this morning, while shaving, and the memory was the impetus for a search to find out about Bud.

I was sad to see that he had passed.

They are all gone now, Bud, Eleanor, Lori and Alex. But their love of life, friends and family will always be remembered.

I'm sorry for his family's loss. His humor was so infectious (should I say humerus?), he has left all who knew him with warm thoughts.

Bud and Eleanor welcomed us to Sudbury long ago, and were our warm and caring neighbors for many years. Bud was our wise and trusted "neighborhood doc," a source of calmness as well as good advice. We enjoyed celebrating life cycle events together, and will always remember him with great respect and affection. Our sincere condolences go out to Amy, Nancy, and Andy and their families. Your dad was a wonderful man.

Sincere sympathy on the loss of your father, poppy, and uncle. Bud lived in the same building as my parents do in NewBridge on the Charles and my heart soared anytime I ran into him. He always had time for me with kind words or a warm smile on his face. Please accept my support and comfort at this time.
