We are deeply saddened to hear of Stan's death. He was an inspiration to us in his commitment to social justice and his fortitude in bearing up under Parkinson's. We enjoyed his enthusiasm for gardening and for life in general. We are truly richer for having known him.

I was fortunate enough to share an office with Stan after he became emeritus. A wonderful man, great scientist and I learned a lot about his field through osmosis. The shared office was one of the joys I had while at CELS.

Stan lived his life as such a fine example to so many students and colleagues over so many years. He was a professor during my first year in grad school at URI and he was a co-PI on my first grant as we later became colleagues. As I entered my scientific career, and for many years to follow, he was my ideal, my role model, my North Star. The world has lost a great scientist and an even better person. Sincere condolences to his family.
