A good man, a gentle man, and a true gentleman. I am grateful to be among those whose lives Dan touched deeply with his kindness, his humor, his encouragement, and his wisdom. His legacy will live on in the lives of the many students, colleagues, and friends who were transformed by his wonderful influence.

Professor White was an inspiration to me, as a student in his Religious Studies classes at my time at UNCC (late '80s and early '90s). In addition, his teachings of compassion, woven into the fabric of his lessons, affected me in a positive manner that I will keep with me in my own life. Thank you, sir.

I was shocked to hear the news of Dan's passing. As Jeff Meyer's replacement in the study of Chinese religions at UNC Charlotte, I worked with Dan during a formative time in my career. I shall forever cherish our lunch discussions about the place of Asian religions in the larger work of the Department over dosas at the Passage to India restaurant across the street from the University. I appreciated his welcoming smile and giddy laugh. Dan brought so much light to people like me throughout his...

Dear Mrs. White:
I was a student of Dr. White on the 1988 Fulbright trip to India. It was such a privilege for me to be a recipient of your husband's vast knowledge of India, its religion and architecture. I wish he were here for me to thank him again. So, I am particularly saddened to hear of the loss of such a wonderful man and teacher. My deepest condolences to you and your family.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Dan's death. As a fellow member of Myers Park Baptist Church he was so often and in so many ways my mentor, my teacher and my co-conspirator. I'll be wearing my seersucker suit to his memorial service in recognition of the many things that drew us together.
What a man, what a loss to our church and our community.
