I found the girl of my dreams, and needed a job right away! I called every contractor in the phone book, leaving messages. I must have made 40 calls, no one answered. Then I called Jack. He answered. I convinced him to take a look at me even though he was not hiring. We hit it off and I happily worked for Jack for 11 years. He knew how to empower people, so they would want to perform well. I fell down some stairs, and dropped a window I was carrying into a new window with broken glass...

As Jack's next-door neighbor for 17 years, I think what I miss will be hearing him tinkering on his hot rods in his garage. He found a lot of joy bringing his old Fords back to life and he was a very good mechanic, in addition to his other skills. He was a great neighbor in many ways--always there when I needed a hand, but providing plenty of space. We had a lot of good times talking "over the fence" and sharing fantastic meals at Jack and Jill's house or dining out in Fairfax or San Anselmo....
