Not sure what to say?

You will never be forgotten Jack.

Jack was a long time friend of our dad Gene Spathas. Dad and Jack had a lot of laughs and fun over the years. Jack was always there for our family - a true friend, incredible athlete, always fit. Jack was not only a champion on the court - he was a champion of loyalty and friendships. Thoughts and prayers are will the Scrivens family.

It has been over 9 months since my dear Uncle Jack shed his mortal shroud. The news of his passing is still hard to accept. For several years he was a surrogate father for me (as my father, his brother Bill lived over seas and only came home every 2 years.) He always took me to the MAC club for my birthday and I would visit him often at Nick's Coney Island or at his house close to Reed on Bybee. I knew if I ever needed anything , Jack had my back. I have missed him for the last few years as...

I was fortunate to be at Reed when the new "Sports Palace" was built, and got to follow Jack through the initiation into playing paddle ball, then using a very small paddle, 3" in diameter, to learn to play handball. He took us into squash, and we passed his examination to see if we were good enough not to kill each other in the doubles squash court. I fondly called him "Circus Jack" because of the amazing things he could do with a ball and a court. When my son chose to attend Reed in 1998,...

Jack introduced me to squash and I played all four years at Reed. I made it to the top of the women's ladder and started playing men on the men's ladder. Sometimes I played seven days per week and played in a few tournaments too. Squash definitely helped me get through those tough times at Reed. I love squash to this day although it has been years since I played. I still have my squash racket and I can still hear the sound of the ball hitting the walls. I have such fond memories of...

Jack's squash classes and his laid-back bossing of the Sports Center at Reed College were much-loved. For me & the other Reedies, the break from stress there was a life-saver.

Whenever I dug down beneath Portlandia and encountered Old Portland -- when I worked at the MAC & ate at Nick's Coney Island -- it seemed like I'd find news of Jack. I wish I knew Old Portland & Jack better... but I'm grateful to know them as well as I do.
