Jackie L. McFarlane Jr. jealously guarded time with his wife, Shanaye. "We used to say to him, 'Can Shanaye come out and play?'" said Kim Johnson, a family friend. "They were best friends, inseparable best friends." McFarlane, 30, of Virginia Beach, Va., was killed Aug. 14 when his helicopter crashed in Taqaddum. He was a 1994 high school graduate and was assigned to Fort Wainwright. McFarlane joined the military in August 1994. Over the next decade, he spent time at Fort Carson, at Fort Rucker, in Germany and in North Carolina. He was on his third deployment to Iraq. He and Shanaye were married in 1994, when McFarlane was 17 and his wife was 16. McFarlane saw the military as a way to better himself. He encouraged his wife to continue her education as well. "He just pushed her and challenged her," said his mother-in-law, Karen Martin. McFarlane also is survived by his children, Janee, 7, and Joshua, 2. "I think he would want you to know that he was a child of God, and then a father, and then a soldier," Johnson said. "His family was utmost to him. His family was his life."

Not sure what to say?

Jack, my guy Simply the best man, husband, father and friend anyone could ask for. Can’t put it into words but I Miss you man.. Woke up this morning thinking about you and some of our many conversations which still guide and help me through challenges and/or just protecting my peace. until we meet again my friend, I love you and miss you brother ❤

My brother. My brother. My brother. Man I miss you soooooo much. I remember all the times you used to get me in trouble and all the times you used to pick on me. Even though Im the big sister you still always acted like you were in charge. You never let me boss you around. 18 years later and I still cant believe you aren't here. I need you here to pick with your nephews....to help me keep Dex in line. To make me laugh. We were supposed to raise our kids together. To travel together. We...

I think of you and your family often, my brother. May God watch over them with eyes that never sleep. May you and all the boys onboard 171 rest easy. "Dry Ice 71" final call sign.

I went to college with Jackie on Post on Fort Wainwright in Alaska. I was the only female in the Embry Riddle Aeronautical University class and we had an instructor who would say many inappropriate things. Jackie did not ever join in when bad things were said like other guys. He was a Christian, great father, soldier, peer, and friend. One day before class, he handed me a Christian music cd he made. He knew I was dealing with the drama of class, being a single mother, working multiple jobs,...

Minister McFarlane you are sorely missed, but I often reminded of your humor. Today is a sad day, but I know that you are enjoying Heaven. My thoughts are of Shanay and the children today. I'll see you in heaven!

Chief Warrant Officer Two Jackie L. McFarlane, When I heard the news of what had happened I can't say a thing, because of the shock I was in after hearing about the lose of a friend. Jackie, I can't thank you enough for all the advice you gave me when we were crewing birds, playing basketball or just talking about life in general. This world has lost a great person, caring husband, loving father, and an outstanding Soldier. You are and will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

To the family and friends of Chief Warrant Officer Jackie L. McFarlane:
Please accept my remembrance of Jackie on the anniversary of his passing and know that he will never be forgotten.

The best friend and brother you could ever ask for. I love and miss him dearly.

CW2 Mcfarlane, was the very first role model I had coming into the Army when I met him in Germany, when he was my Platoon Sergeant. If it was not for him, I would not have strived to be the NCO I am today. I miss him dearly. He is what the Army should be about, and any soldier should ever strive to be. I miss you Mac, very much.
