I met Jacques in Tangier when he came back from his war experience. At that time everybody, including his mother, called him Coco. We started going out and he ended up by asking me to marry him. I refused as I considered him a very good friend, nothing else. I saw him again in Tangier when he visited my mother with his son Paul and once in Paris. And then I lost contact. He was a referent for us all and will miss him.

I took undergraduate French courses with Professor Barchilon in the mid-70's. He taught with patience and humor and never talked about his harrowing youth, although he could be persuaded to do so during office hours. I only discovered in later years that he was a top scholar of French fairy tales and specifically Perrault, and I was amazed by how painstakingly he had taught remedial grammar, which must have been excruciatingly unchallenging to him.
I am so happy to that he reconnected...
