I think often of Papa. If he was here now he would make me laugh with a dry, witty remark about the absurdity of something or other. I've been thinking of him and Nana often as I've started playing piano again. Every day I care for patients as a Nurse I know I'm making him proud. Tomorrow for All Soul's Day I'll put a picture of him and my grandmother on the Alter at St. Anne Church in Queen Anne. I miss them both. All the happiness I have experienced is because of the time they gave and...

Papa,
What a witty, talented man!!! Whether it was composing or completing a crossword, there was nothing he didn't make look easy. I always admired his caring ways, his overcoming of challenges and his dedication to his family. He was truly one-of-a-kind...there will never be another James Beale. May his talent and wit live on in his namesake, his great-grandson.

From the Valley of the Sun, belated sympathies to Mrs. Jane Beale and family. I was a music theory student of the "wild and dynamic Mr. B." during my 1956-58 UW attendance. His dry humor was always appreciated, along with his most capable musicianship. Over the years I have fondly remembered his instruction. His lessons live on.

Jim Beale was a good friend of my husband, Warren Babb. Now they both are gone. I had Mr. Beale as music theory professor for several quarters, and valued his quiet enthusiasm for music. He both stimulated my mind and gave me time to think as he taught. I shall never forget him.

I studied counterpoint & contemporary techniques with Professor Beale for a solid year of undergraduate work.
How I valued this gifted teacher! I knew at the time that we were all privileged to be learning from such a talented musician. His skills at correcting our assignments "at the board" were astonishing! He could, it seems, mentally hear the problems and correct them on the spot. Remarkable talent.
And a remarkable instructor - such a arch sense of humor! In...
