When Jim started the Columbia Journalism Review, in 1961, I was a student at the J School, and he drafted me to write an article for the magazine. I was to evaluate newspaper coverage of the Nixon-Kennedy campaign. I discovered that the Baltimore Sun, in an effort to appear even-handed, would lead with a Nixon story one day and a Kennedy story the next -- regardless of the news value of the article.
