My sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Buchanan. Jim Buchanan taught me to play the tenor trombone - with great patience, courtesy and enthusiasm - from 1969 to 1974, in his Hilton Music store on Springfield Avenue. During my high school years he referred me to his local church for use as a supplementary brass performer for special services. When I expressed an interest in pop music Mr. Buchanan worked with me to learn or to transpose the melodies of many pop standards. I still use...

Jim was a classmate of mine, and one of the kindest, gentle person I ever knew He was truly loved by everyone who knew him. May he Rest in Peace.

I am saddened and poorer today. Jim was an icon; a prince of a man; wonderful friend since childhood, and bandmate. So talented yet unassuming. It'll be tough not being able to reminisce with him. Please be well Bruce, Kim, and Rebekah. ~Alan Cooper

Mr. Buchanan was my very first trombone teacher and band leader at Harrison Elementary School in West Caldwell. Later, he was the conductor of the orchestra at Grover Cleveland Junior High and James Caldwell High School, taught me upright bass, and allowed my friend Ted and I to play with a synthesizer. I still have the book he started me with back in 4th grade, so when I started playing again 8 years ago, I started over with that book. I appreciate all that Mr. Buchanan taught me with...

I'm deeply saddened today. Jim and I were schoolmates from kindergarten through College. His father was our insurance agent. Brother Howard and I worked together in Morristown, So there was always a Buchanan on my life. He was a wonderful musician and human being. and his courage was always an inspiration to me. My heartfelt condolences to the family.
