A western New York Army sergeant who was killed in Iraq during a ground assault in Fallujah was a star football player who had a few months left in his deployment, his father said. Army Sgt. James C. Matteson, 23, of Jamestown, died Friday in a rocket-propelled grenade attack, said his father, James L. Matteson. "We were told that he was fighting gallantly against insurgents in Fallujah," his father said. "He died a heroic death." The younger Matteson, known to friends as "J.C." would have turned 24 on Nov. 22, and was scheduled to return home on Feb. 1, 2005. "I was getting ready to mail out his birthday card when an Army captain showed up at the door," said his father, his voice filled with emotion. Matteson, a star running back and 1998 graduate of Southwestern High School, was killed during a battle early Friday. His death came during a week of fierce and bloody street fighting in Fallujah to retake the city from insurgents. On Sunday, the U.S. military said 38 Americans have been killed in the siege. Officials said ground and air assault of Fallujah went quicker than expected, with the entire city occupied after six days of fighting. Word of Matteson''s death devastated students, teachers and alumni at his high school. Football coach Jay Sirianni said the team learned of the tragedy Friday, a day before the Trojans'' 12-7 loss to Hornell in a Class B Regional game at Ralph Wilson Stadium. As a tribute to Matteson, Southwestern players in Saturday''s game wore a small, black decal with the number 28 _ Matteson''s high school number _ on their helmets. Coaches wore black strips on the back of their baseball caps. "Sometimes a football team can do a lot of things for a community, or past members or past players, and give them a lot of pride, and we played that game for J.C.," Sirianni said. ___ Information from: The Buffalo News, http://www.buffalonews.com

Flag Line at the Northern Colorado Honor Flight
I had the honor of holding a flag today for the Northern Colorado Honor Flight. It was not just any flag, it was dedicated to James. I read the small story and thought about this fellow New Yorker. It was my honor to keep him close to me today! May he rest in peace and may you be comforted in all the memories and blessings he gave you.

J.C.- I knew you when I was probably 16. I'm 30 now. I remember looking up to you, we were convinced you would play ball in college and be something even bigger than you already were to us. You and Nick looked out for me one particular night. You were a hero to us in High School and a hero to us now. You are missed.

J.C it's been years, but it still seems like yesterday. My dear brother my best friend. I hear your messages that you send through the radio a fav. Song of yours, that usually never played these times in age. I know life is not the same without here. I talk to your niece's and try to help them understand. That you gave your life for our freedom. Yet they are are only 5 and 4. I tell Jaycie that she was named after you in your memory. We all love you and miss you enormously. Till we meet again...

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also to let the Matteson Family know that we recently sent a donation to the Walter Reed Medical Center in the name of James C. Matteson US Army Sergeant. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,
Charlie...
