James Christopher Califf, MD, went peacefully to his heavenly home on January 2, 2025, with his loving wife, Laurie, by his side, in their Summerfield home. Jim was devoted to his faith, family, and friends. He was admired and adored by the many lives he touched. Even amidst a long and valiant...

Not sure what to say?

I was referred to Dr. Califf, along with a recently taken MRI. He showed me a collapsed disc and said I would need Spinal Fusion surgery. YIKES!!! His calm, gentle manner calmed me down-I knew he was the surgeon to do the job; no need for the usual second opinion. He did a terrific surgery-I went home after only one night in the hospital. I made a full recovery. I only just found out about his passing when I recommended him to a neighbor and she told me he was gone. I loved Dr. Califf; my...

Dr. James Califf was my Orthopedic Surgeon for 22 years, in both Kernodle Clinic Orthopedics in Burlington, NC and also in Dr. Califf´s Orthopedics Practice in Boone, NC. Dr. Califf completed two highly successful L-4 & L-5. low-back nerve-impingement surgeries, plus a left total knee replacement and a disc fusion surgery in my neck. I became aware that Dr. James Califf had earned the most highly respected and well-deserved reputation as being among the most talented, highly skilled and...

Dear Jim's family, I was always greeted with a smile from Jim at medical school. He loved to crack jokes and laugh. It made the lab sessions more fun to have him sitting across the table. So sorry to hear Jim has died. Susie Page Lodewijks Class of 82

Throughout medical school and residency, Jim´s sense of humor and dependability were unmatched. There was no better person to "be in the foxhole with ".

I am so sorry for your loss. I arrived at Duke the year after James finished for my Hand Surgery Fellowship. I was moved by his story. At Duke I learned what it meant to be a real southern gentleman, and James certainly sounds like that! Bless him and all of you.

Great man and physician and example with a positive approach to life. May prayers cover his family in this moment.

I always enjoyed working with Jim whether it was in the OR, or clinic. His upbeat demeanor made it fun for me to work with. I am sad because I will miss him.

Dear Laurie, I am so,so sorry for your loss of Jim. I just learned of his passing today. Jim was a wonderful all around person ,and I always enjoyed his company - with his great smile. After he finished his residency ,he attended many of our Duke conferences and his presence elevated our spirits. He was a complete physician for sure. I hope you are doing better by now and will smile when you think of all the good times you shared together. We will send Jim's obituary to the 800+ Piedmont...
