James W. Campbell, 87, died Sunday, January 8, 2023. Born in Newport News on November 25, 1935, he served 4 years in the US Air Force then graduated from the NASA Apprentice School. He remained at NASA for 34 years retiring as an Electronics Technician in 1993. He was a member of the Laf-A-Lot Hunt Club and Monitor Lodge #197 AF & AM.


Preceded in death by his parents, Lemma Aldie Pruitt and William Campbell; survivors include his wife of 66 years, Joan Forrest Campbell; his sons, Thomas Wayne Campbell and wife, Susan and James William Campbell, Jr. and wife, Dela; a granddaughter, Courtney Campbell; and a brother, Charles Thomas Campbell and wife, Deanna.


All services will be private.

Prayers for consolation and peace to the entire Campbell family. Although we were not formally family, we knew them as Uncle Jimmy and Aunt Joan and loved them as well as their sons Wayne and Billy and their families as our family. I will always carry in my heart the memories made growing up with the Campbell family whether it be times at the lodge with Uncle Jimmy trying to teach us to fish or to row a boat or hearing him reassure me that I had nothing to fear from the deer head on the...

It's been far too many years, but I have such incredibly fond memories of our families spending time together all those years ago; such wonderful, genuine, caring and gracious dear friends.
