James Corwin Obituary

James Albert Corwin (M.D., Col USAF) passed away on the morning of Wednesday November 21, 2018. He is survived by his wife, Georgia; his daughters Katherine and Emily; his son-in-law Patrick; his sisters Sandra, Michelle, and Kathleen; and his nephews Jay and Craig. James Albert Corwin was born in Southampton, New York on February 14, 1946, to Florence and Richard Corwin. He was raised in nearby Springs, where he participated in 4H. An animal lover from birth, he raised cows and horses and enjoyed the company of the cats and dogs on the farm. At an early age, he developed an interest in medicine, while helping the local doctor with his rounds. After graduating at 16 from East Hampton High School, he attended Duke University to study chemistry, where he was captain of the ROTC unit. He subsequently attended medical school at Tufts University. He graduated from Tufts with a Masters degree in anatomy, as well as his doctorate in medicine. While serving as an Air Force officer, he practiced medicine at Lackland Air Force Base's Wilford Hall Medical Facility in San Antonio, where he met his wife, Georgia, and had their first daughter, Katherine. During his Air Force career, Dr. James Albert Corwin was awarded the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with one bronze oak leaf cluster, the National Defense Service Medal, the Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon, and the Air Force Legion of Merit award. He distinguished himself by especially meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the United States as Chief, Radiotherapy Service, Department of Radiology, Wilford Hall United State Air Force Medical Center, Air Training Command, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, from 17 July 1978 to 30 September 1987. During this period, the outstanding professional skill, leadership, and ceaseless efforts of Colonel Corwin resulted in major contributions to the effectiveness and success of the Medical Center mission, and contributed immeasurably to the radiological care of patients with malignant disease throughout the United States Air Force. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Colonel Corwin culminate a distinguished career in the service of his country and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force. James Corwin was on the working committee that created the rules for radiation therapy for the Air Force and directly advised the Surgeon General on the creation and implementation of these rules. After 22 years of service in the Air Force, he retired as a full Colonel. James Corwin and Georgia moved to Midland, where he began working at the Allison Cancer Center. His second daughter, Emily, was born shortly thereafter. He worked as the Radiation Oncologist at the Allison Cancer Center from 1987 to 2016. He founded, and was very actively involved in, Hospice of Midland and Hope House. He and Georgia donated to Round Up: A Cattle Baron's Ball, the American Cancer Society, the Humane Society, and many other philanthropic organizations. He was an active member of Saint Nicholas' Episcopal Church. Upon retiring, he joyously spent his time with his animals and attending to his land. He loved his family, patients, and critters immeasurably. Through his indefatigable spirit, intelligence and industrious commitment to bettering the lives of his patients, humanity, and humor, he left an indelible mark upon his family, colleagues, patients, and friends. He will be forever missed by his family, his friends, and the community. Memorial services will be held Tuesday November, 27, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. at Saint Nicholas' Episcopal Church. A private graveside burial will take place in East Hampton, New York. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of James Albert Corwin.

Terry and I were so saddened and shocked to hear of Dr. Corwin's passing. He was such a wonderful doctor and Terry always enjoyed interacting with him. He often treated patients for Terry. Georgia, my heart aches for you and I pray for peace and comfort for you. If there is anything I can do for you, I'm just a few blocks away. Blessings, Nancy Tubb

Dr Corwin was a very kind hearted and forthright individual. I was only able to meet and know him for a short time, but within that time I was able to get to know the integrity and joy that he brought to a conversation. It was honor and a pleasure to have been able to know a man who seemed to have touched an changed so many of those he came into contact with. You will be greatly missed.
