A Father's Happiest Hours

James E. Cove loved happy hour, but even when he traveled on business to a pub-besotted place like Dublin, happy hour meant going to the local department store and selecting gifts for his three boys, Michael, Ryan and Gregory.

"That was Jim's version of happy hour," said his wife, Theresa. "He deliberated over every aspect of the gift to make sure it was just right for the child and for the family budget." That is not to suggest that he was a teetotaler. "Jim loved his beer," she said. "He would work hard in the backyard and suck down two Coronas with the lime in them."

Mr. Cove, 48, was a senior vice president at Aon Insurance, an avid fan of skiing and hockey. He had such a wicked sense of humor that it was said "he could break up a high Mass with a one-liner."

His successes in the insurance business were many, but he kept those achievements in perspective. "The pride he had in his family outshone the success he had in business," his brother Frank said. "Jimmy was more proud of being a good father than being a senior vice president."

Not sure what to say?

I’m a fourth grader from California and at my school we learned about September 11th today. In class we each got names of people who died that day and I got James. My family has been reading about you and you sound like a really nice person.

Dear Jim,

I can't believe after 20 years, you come to my mind so often during the years. Almost every day. When I think about it, I realize I am still mourning the loss of a soft spoken kind and funny friend. We didn't socialize much outside A&A, lunches and things, but you made a mark on my life. That's the kind of man you were. An all time great! Rest in heaven and know that your life is celebrated every day by those who knew you and those who haven't.

I love James' definition of happy hour and I pray that his sons are carrying on his legacy by being great human beings. Much love from Texas

Remembering James on the 20th anniversary of 9/11...

Jim, I'll never forget that trick you played a on me in that Mexican restaurant. Boy was that jalapeno hot! You were hysterical while sweat was pouring from me. Wait 'till I get to heaven!

I think about you every day! All you taught me about eating sushi, which I love thanks to you and to enjoy a Beefeater martini! You will always be in my heart and on my mind!

You could not have died in vain that awful day in New York. RIP

Jim,

You are remembered in this 15th year, as I remember you throughout the year. Your life is celebrated, and for me especially for the good friend you were.

I used to share many a childhood adventure with "Jimmy" on 26th Street (I seem to recall that his Grandmother lived on 26th) and over at his apartment on 28th and Avenue D (??).

I have many fond memories of those days.
