Maus Funeral Home - Attica Obituary

Williamsport - James “Cowboy Jim” Martin Harger, 90, of Williamsport died at 11:13 a.m. on Sunday, March 10, 2024 at the Franciscan Health Lafayette East Hospital.
Jim was born on March 12, 1933 in Dowagiac, Michigan. He was the son of the late Abner and Celeste (Adkins) Harger.   He grew up in Oklahoma and Texas and started working at a young age picking cotton.  He served in the US Army from 1953-1955.  Following his service, he moved to Indiana. He started working at Globe Valve in Delphi, retiring in 1995 as a shipping clerk.  He also worked at the West Lafayette WalMart for 30 years, stocking and in their maintenance department.
Jim was a cowboy at heart, never to be without his cowboy boots.  He loved to watch westerns and his favorite actor was Gene Autry.  He loved puzzles and games; especially card games, Bingo or buying lottery tickets.  He loved to read the newspaper.  He was a devoted family man and never missed attending his grandchildren’s events.
Jim married Sheryl Strickler on December 10, 1983 in Williamsport.  She survives along with three children, Shonda (Shane) Haygood, Camden, Dennis Welchman, Williamsport, and Carla (Dan) Spitznagle, Delphi; a sister, Ada, West Virginia; six grandchildren, Nick Burris, Cameron Spitznagle, Shelbi (Dillon) Mang, Zach Welchman-Robinson, Conner Spitznagle and Kiley Haygood; and several nieces and nephews.  He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mary, and ten brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be held at the Maus Funeral Home, Attica, on Saturday, March 16, 2024 from 12:00 noon until the service time of 2:00 p.m.  Burial with military honors will follow in the Highland Cemetery, Williamsport.  Contributions may be made to the family to help with expenses.
