Mr. James Gilbert Crumble was born on July 17th, 1946 in Tarboro,
North Carolina to the late Mr. Plummer Este and Mrs. Viola Crumble.
Gilbert, as he was affectionately known as by family and friends, was
called home to be with The Lord on Sunday, April 24th, 2022 in
Greenville, NC surrounded by his loving family.
Gilbert was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather,
brother, uncle, and friend to many. Gilbert loved to be with his
family, listening and dancing to music, and laughing. He was often
seen with a smile on his face and was known to make others laugh.
Gilbert was a known protector and defender of his family and friends
and would often say “if you saw me in a fight with a bear, don’t help
me, help the bear.” Gilbert worked for the City of Virginia Beach for
28 years, was a DJ for 20 years, and after retiring from the city,
continued working by building his own Lawn care business that he loved
doing up until his passing. He shared a love of cars and motorcycles,
especially for his Monte Carlo race car and Honda motorcycle.
Gilbert is preceded by his parents and his brother, Plummer Este Crumble Jr.
Gilbert leaves to cherish his memories his loving and devoted wife,
Phyllis Crumble, with who he shared almost 58 years of marriage and
three beautiful children: James Gilbert Crumble Jr, Darryl O’Keith
Crumble, and Catrinna Raeschelle Bitting (Glenn), all of Virginia
Beach. Two brothers: Plummer Lee Crumble and William David Crumble
both of Virginia Beach, as well as two sisters: Margaret Palmer (Late
Starley) of Virginia Beach and Rosa Owens (Late Zan) of Upper Malboro,
MD. Two sisters-in-law: Essie Green (Late John Lee) of Greenville, NC
and Yvonne Carmon (Alton) of Grimesland, NC. He also leaves The
Jenkins family, who he considered also to be his brothers and sisters
who he loved dearly. Gilbert had a total of 11 grandchildren and 12
great-grandchildren but was excited and looking forward to having his
13th great-grandchild in July near his birthday. He will be dearly
missed by all who knew him.
