I am in Portland, Oregon, on a family trip, and will not be able to attend Judge Dowden's funeral, which I would certainly do otherwise. He was a kind and gentle man, and an excellent judge. He could see the merits and weaknesses of both sides (sometimes better than counsel did), which gave him the ability to move the parties towards settlement, if it was possible. He was one of the last of the old-time judges of Hudson County and embodied the phrase "judicial temperament". I will keep him...
