James EBERHARDT Obituary

LYNCHBURG - James Reed Eberhardt, 86, a longtime resident of Lynchburg, died on Nov. 21, 2012, at Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, N.C., from complications arising from cancer.
He was the son of the late Fred Milton Eberhardt, and Janet Craig Eberhardt. Jim was faithful member of Grace Memorial Episcopal Church, in Lynchburg, Va.
Jim or PaPa or Mr. Eb, as his friends and family knew him, was born in Lynchburg, Va., on Jan. 16, 1926. He was a United States Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He attended Bluefield College, and Lynchburg College, on the GI Bill. An architect by trade, Jim was employed as the director of plant development for the Newport News Public School System, retiring in 1988.
Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Martha Carter Eberhardt of Lynchburg, Va., in 2007. In 2008 he became a resident of his beloved Nags Head, N.C., where he and Martha kept a vacation home. Not one to stay idle, Jim led an active life on the Outer Banks where he made many new friends and volunteered at The Outer Banks Hospital.
He is survived by his daughter, Beth Huntington and husband Bob, of Lynchburg, Va.; his son, Rick Eberhardt and wife Cyndie, of Williamsburg, Va.; grandchildren, Joey Dudding, of Brooklyn, N.Y., Michael Dudding and wife Larissa Kravanja, of Richmond, Va., and Leigh Mazzone and husband Luke, of Charlottesville, Va.; brother-in-law, John A. Carter and wife Mary Ann, of Lynchburg, Va.; nieces, Bev Conner of Lynchburg, Va., and Susie Gillespie of Sneads Ferry, N.C.
Jim Eberhardt was a devoted husband, and the ideal father and grandfather. He could be depended on to raise his flags every morning, sweep off the deck, and to be a source of good humor, strength, and kindness to whomever needed him. Jim was a great man, and he will be deeply missed.
A graveside service will be conducted at Spring Hill Cemetery in Lynchburg, Va., at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, by the Rev. Cathy Montgomery, and the Rev. Dr. Pete Warren.
Friends and family will gather at The Depot Restaurant after the service for fellowship and remembrances of Jim's life.

My mother and I were so sad to hear of your father's passing. I had the pleasure of getting to know your father when I spent time with my mother at Legacy Oaks. He was willing to lend a helping hand to all the neighbors. He always walked my mother's trash can to her garage door, and he helped me on several occasions move large items in/out of my car.We are sorry for your loss. I have made a donation to the Veterans of Foreign Wars from Marie O'Busek and Wanda Vukmirovich.

Dear Eberhardt family, The staff in the emergency room at the Outerbanks Hospital cannot believe we will not see Jim's smiling face, he always made us laugh, and worked so hard for us nurses when he was volunteering. He did not want to stand still while he was volunteering. He will be missed as a friend and for how he lightened the atomsphere in the er. Patricia Kuhn

Sorry to hear the news on Jim. I have lots of memories of him but I once recall seeing him at a LC reunion and his class was in the same room as our class and he was 25 years ahead of us. He came over and chatted with us like we were long lost friends. He never met a stranger. Hi to the family. Stuart Porter, Lynchburg Va.

Rick, Beth and the Eberhardt Family,
I was sorry to hear of the passing of your Dad. When we were neighbors on Carnegie Dr. I looked up to him and really respected his values. I remember him telling me about being a tail gunner in a B-24 in WWII and about being in the big raids. Rick had a really detailed model that only comes with detailed knowledge of riding that beast for many hours. Later in the construction world I learned of his great reputation of being tough but fair when he was a construction manager after leaving the school system. It was fun growing up as your next door neighbors and knowing your parents. I hope you guys are doing well.

I had the pleasure of knowing/working with Jim during my years at NNPS. What a super person! I could always count on him to be there when help was needed. Jim and Martha were a great couple. My best to his family.

Dear Eberhardt family,

I got to know Jim and Molly when I moved from Callao, VA to Lynchburg. I had the good fortune to buy a lot and have a house built across the street from these wonderful peolple who I soon came to know and love. Jim was a great neighbor and I felt it a great loss, not only to me but, to our entire neighborhhood when he moved to his beach house. He has been and will continue to be greatly missed.

Dear Eberhardt Family,

It is with great sadness that I learn of Jim's passing. As beach neighbors, we shared a kindred friendship for the love of Nags Head, always talking about its past and future. He also spoke fondly of his Virginia roots, especially Lynchburg. Jim was a true gentleman, always willing to offer a helping hand. The world was a kinder, gentler place with him. He will be truly missed.
Rest in peace, dear friend.

With deepest sympathy,

Susan
