Not sure what to say?

Judge James Ellis was a powerful influence and a valuable mentor when I was a new attorney in the Multnomah County District Attorney's office. Judge Ellis worked hard, fair to all participants and greatly respected. He is fondly
remembered.

It is with sadness that I heard of the passing of Judge Ellis. He was a great judge of the "old school", unfailingly polite, and always on top of his game. I will miss him.

Judge Ellis was fair, honest, impartial, conscientious, and unfailingly courteous to everyone who appeared in his courtroom. He listened, and he heard. He possessed great common sense and good judgment, and was an all-round excellent judge. A job well done, Judge Ellis. Thank you.

It is with great sadness that we hear of Jim's passing. It was indeed an honor to know and serve with him for many years. He embodied the ideal of service above self. We all greatly benefited from his leadership and mentorship over the years. In 1991 we had the honor of having Jim marry us. He will be missed by so many.

Dear Sarah,

I'm sorry to read of your dad's death. I feel lucky to have "shared" your family for so many years when we were young. I even still have photos of us in the courthouse at your father's swearing-in as a judge when we were, what, about 14? My condolences to you and your family

He handled cases that were big and small, but whatever part you played when you came into his courtroom, you knew that he was thoroughly prepared and would take the time to listen. Lawyers and litigants knew they had better be on their toes. And preferably standing at attention and at the top of their game. Portland was (and...
