I remember purchasing from Art Coins as far back as 45 years ago from Jim Fairfield. We would ride our bikes downtown to his store on Barr Street and spend an hour looking around sometimes not buying anything. Still stop in occasionally at their newest location. Jim will be remembered as the first and most memorable numismatist of my lifetime.

During many springs I would leave the MPC Fest in Port Clinton, Ohio and drive down to Fort Wayne. First I would see one of my old aunts, who has since passed away, then drive to Neil Soward's old store. After going through the tokens and medals stock books, I would have a nearby lunch with two VN War veteran friends of mine. After lunch, I would go to Fairfield Rare Coins. As I walked in, I would go all the way around the coin and paper money counters and walk up to a wall display that included some SE Asian pieces I wanted to buy. Before I could turn around, Jim would tell me, as he did every time, "It is not for sale." I am sure Jim will be looking down at me the next time I am in his store and telling me it is still not for sale. I am already missing him.

Just heard of Jims passing. So sorry. Great man always spoke his thoughts, honest to a tee. He always had a story and something to say. I enjoyed talking to him at the coin shop for years. He will be missed.

My fondest memory of this very joyous and pleasant friend is the time we paid $600 for a limo to haul us from a show in California to a casino in Lake Tahoe. We got there and it was snowing quite a bit. We had a great time, won enough to pay the limo driver and laughed all the way there and back.
Jim was a loving and humble man, who never lost an opportunity to make others laugh and feel comfortably welcome! I will miss him very much.

Dear Jim Fairfield, Jr.
My prayers are with you and your family. I just got back from West Virginia where I was helping my sister with her medical problems.
May you feel God's comfort.

Thank you for the slideshow highlighting this gentleman's life. It was at the same time quite poignant and yet lighthearted. " A boy and his car" is a delight. Jim Fairfield's name was well known to me before I finally put a face to the name. My husband, Tom was fond of Jim and when I had the pleasure of meeting him I knew why. Some people have a quiet dignity that can open up like a book and let you see a humorous side you'd never would have imagined. I witnessed that in my short personal relationship! You may be surprised at the number of people who may have but briefly shared a word with him, but will feel a pang of loss. May God comfort you in this time of sadness and bless you in the coming days. Tommie Manny

Jim, you always made me smile with your quick wit and those awful jokes you used to tell me! While we go back quite a way in Coins, it is your friendship I will always treasure the most-Rest in Peace my friend.
