GARDINER, James Dickie - Of Swartz Creek, age 90, died Saturday, January 24, 2009 at Avalon Hospice. Funeral service will be held 2:30PM Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Reverend Audrey Charlton officiating. Burial in Flint Memorial Park with a military graveside service under the auspices of the Marine Corp League Flint Detachment #155 Honor Guard. Those desiring may make contributions to the Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children or Avalon Hospice. Visitation 4PM-8PM Monday at the funeral home. A Memorial Service by Fellowship Lodge No. 490 F.&A.M. will be held 6PM Monday at the funeral home. Visitation 11AM Tuesday until the time of service. James was born in Kilburnie, Scotland on August 13, 1918 and was a resident of Flint most of his life, moving to Pinconning in 1978. On April 29, 1939, he married Virginia Nelson. In 1944, James enlisted with the U.S. Navy during World War II. James was a member of Community Presbyterian Church in Flint. He was also a Life member of Fellowship Lodge No 490 F.&A.M., a member of the Bay City Consistory, Elf Khurafeh Shrine in Saginaw and the Shrine Clown Unit, a life member of VFW Post 3753 in Pinconning and a member of UAW Local 599. Mr. Gardiner was employed by Buick Motor Company at Factory 29 for 38 years, retiring in 1974. Surviving are wife, Virginia of 69 years; daughter, Judith I. and husband James Allen of Flint; son, James A. and wife Elizabeth Gardiner of Flint; 4 grandchildren, Linda Ann Allen of Illinois, Diane Lee Allen and husband Fred Sisco of Flushing, Jay C. and Kim Gardiner of Charlotte, N.C. and Sarah E. and husband Aaron Kneas of Charlotte, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Jimmy Sisco, Elsie and Alex Kneas. I was very fond of Mr. Gardiner, I was their housekeeper and I always enjoyed the time at their house listening as I cleaned to Mr Gardiner tell me stories of the days of the shriners and of his days in the military.. he was a Great man and will always keep a special place in my heart.
