Not sure what to say?

Jim helped and supported me when I was at my lowest point. And for that I am eternally grateful. Your dedication to helping kids has always been an inspiration to me. Your memory is a blessing. ~Bill

Jim Gum was an outstanding leader. He knew what it took to be a great teacher and expected that from every one in the building. He had a great sense of humor. He could put you in check and do it with a smile. I am proud I had the opportunity to work with him

I had the honor of working with Jim during his time at Newport Schools. I will always remember his wonderful sense of humor and his dedication to the students. Every conversation about school was focused on, "how will this help our kids".

I was a student of "Mr. Gum" in the '70s when he was a PE teacher and assistant principal at North Avondale School (also assistant manager at Clinton Hills Swim Club). I was an athletic zero and subject to being bullied. Jim was kind and caring and inspiring to me, and helped me find courage. I still think of him often. May he rest in peace.

By chance, I ran across Jim's obituary in the newspaper.

My family lived across the street from the Gum family in the '60s. Jim was a very kind, funny and caring young man; we all admired and respected him--although he was just a few years older than some of us. I am not surprised to hear that he became a principal, as he taught many of us "kids" how to get along!

Jim was one of those people that when you think of them, you smile and have fond memories.

With prayers...

To : Sheryl and Family',
It was my pleasure to know and to learn of the kindest person I've ever known, We will miss him.

Sheryl,
Some of my best memories as a kid are the summer Sunday afternoons when Jim would show up at his mom and dad's and almost the entire neighborhood would be there to play softball. Jim always made it so fun that everyone had a great time. He was kind and made everyone feel they were welcome. Thank you, Jim.

He was one of the best principals I have worked with in CPS. He treated everyone with respect and had the best humor of anyone.I am proud that I knew this man.

Sheryl, Sean, and Chad,

It was with great sadness that Mary Ann and I learned of Jim's passing. I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work for Jim at Hartwell and again at the Pilot Project. A truly dedicated educator. I have fond memories of the times that we golfed and bowled together. He will be missed.
