Markiewicz Funeral Home, P.C. - Lemont Obituary

James Edward Herzing, 76, of Romeoville, IL, passed away peacefully with family Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, IL.

Jim was born on May 16, 1949, in Evergreen Park, IL to Edward Herzing and Gladys Belke Herzing. He married the love of his life, Charlene Marie Karpiak, in Summit, IL on July 3, 1971. She survives. Also surviving are his son, Doug (Rita) Herzing; daughter-in-law, Leah Herzing; 3 grandsons, J.D., Nate, and Raine Herzing; and sister Judy Bakalar. He was preceded in death by his sons, E.J. and Dan Herzing; parents Edward and Gladys; and sister Joyce Hansen.

Jim and Char raised their sons Dan and Doug by creating a home centered on family, faith, and community. Through the busy years of Scouts, band, and sports, Jim and Char volunteered tirelessly — always leading by example and showing what it means to give back.

For 34 years, Jim inspired students as a 7th-grade science teacher at O’Neil Middle School, sparking curiosity and making learning come alive. Over those decades, lifelong friendships were formed — more than 50 years of memories shared with so many dear friends.

When not in the classroom, Jim could be found running the grounds crews for District 58 — a role he proudly held for 40 years. There, he taught countless young people the value of hard work, responsibility, and pride in a job well done.

After retiring, he became affectionately known as “Greeter Jim” during his 12 years at Walmart — always ready with a smile, a joke, or a listening ear for seniors and customers with special needs. He later served as Chairman of Grand Haven’s Property and Grounds Committee, continuing his lifelong mission of service and stewardship.

Jim enjoyed showing his family his love of nature and the peaceful joy of camping, hiking, and fishing. He relished his time with Char, his high school sweetheart, who he showed countless acts of love with his generosity, thoughtfulness and creativity–inspiring his sons with his legendary secret plans and romantic surprises. Jim and Char were able to happily celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2021, when their family gifted them a bench dedicated to their love, overlooking nature at the campgrounds where they created memories together for decades.

Through every chapter of his blessed life, Jim lived with kindness, humility, and an unwavering dedication to others.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Cremation has been accorded. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date to be determined. Updates by Char Herzing are available by Facebook and email.

Not sure what to say?

I was fortunate enough to have Mr. Herzing as a seventh grade science teacher in 1994 in the classroom he was always tough but fair with his grades, but what made Mr. Herzing special was his ability to make science interesting from multiple perspectives, and to pursue curiosities to this day, I still remember a story about how he opened up a lava lamp just to see what the “lava “ was made of.
My condolences to his family and loved ones.

Jim was a jovial, and supportive man. His kindness and love of his family was evident by his love of Char and his sons. Memories of Jim on tag day in a sousaphone helping with the fundraiser was an example of his humor, and dedication and support. His family reflect him well. He will be greatly missed.

I will always appreciate picking up my Christmas Wreaths from the Herzing garage and leaving with a warm feeling and a cookie!

It’s been a long time.what a superb man. I started teaching at O’Neill in 1972, next door to Jim. He took care of me as a new teacher.very kind and always willing to share and quick to laugh. Certainly a true gentleman!
