Not sure what to say?

Deepest condolences. Shifra shulman hanon. University college and school of education

In reviewing the NYU archives, what stands out in my research is a letter to Ralph Ellison from Dowling College inviting Ellison to speak. In making the case to persuade Ralph Ellison to accept their invitation to be a keynote speaker for Dowling's convocation, Dowling quoted words from James Hester that lauded the scholarship and social impact of Ellison. Hester did not subscribe to being invisible in his support of cultural criticism. In fact the establishment of the NYU Institute of...

It is said,” Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.”
Dr. James Hester, the quintessential educator, practiced this when he created the Martin Luther King Scholarship program at NYU, less than 50 days after Dr. King's assassination, in 1968.
By doing this, Dr. Hester involved minority students including myself, in the NYU experience.
That experience helped changed my life and helped set me on a path of engineering, science and business (NYU...

I was a Martin Luther King Scholar and 1973 graduate of University College during Dr Hester's tenure as President of NYU. I deeply appreciate his early efforts to expand educational opportunities for students of color. My condolences to his family on the loss of this visionary man.

I am a graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences, University Heights Campus, class of 1972 and a recipient of a Martin Luther King full scholarship.

I learned at a recent reunion of Dr. Hester's influence in providing these scholarships for the underprivileged students in New York.

I truly appreciate his contributions to society and to me as an individual.....one who was raised in the projects and now is a physician, contributing to society in every way possible.

Dear Janet
We were very sad to learn of the passing of Jim and we send you our warmest condolences.
Jim was an outstanding human being and we are proud to have known him, to have known both of you, a radiating couple. Proud to call you our friends.
We will never have as good neighbors wherever we are wherever we go.
Agnes and Georges Hibon

The Trustees of the Pembroke College (Oxford) Foundation, of which Jim was founding chair, express their deep sympathies to Janet and the Hester family. Jim was a great leader and an inspiration to us. He will be deeply missed. Tom Herman, President, Pembroke College Foundation, Boston

We are already missing Jim, the educator, the artist, the gardener and the enthusiast for so much in life that's interesting. He lived a full, exciting life and was a good friend to so many.

A most impressive individual. My thoughts are with his family and the Princeton Class of 1946.
