James Patrick Houston, Sr., a native of Prichard, AL. He was born November 26, 1928 and exchanged this earthly life for eternity at his residence surrounded by family on Wednesday, June 17, 2020. He was a devoted, lifetime member of St. James Major Church. He served in many different capacities throughout the church and school including but not limited to Parish Council President, Grand Knight, Knights St. Peter Claver Council #172, President School PTA, and also chairman for many years of St. James Annual Fall Festival, "Prichard Town." He was fondly referred by many as "The Barbecue Man," and "Mr. St. James." He married Mamie Harris on April 9, 1950 and the union of James and Mamie produced eight beautiful children. James joins in Christian rest his devoted wife, Mamie, his mother Mattie, his daughter Vernelle, granddaughter, Chanin Hesley, Sisters Amelia Johnson, Ernestine English, Mattie H. Bastiste, brothers Robert Gibson and John Lee Houston. He is survived by seven devoted children, Cynthia Houston, Janice Williams, Carmen Houston, James P. Houston, Jr., Angela Houston, Dominic Houston, John (Gina) Houston; devoted grandchildren, Stephanie Houston, Erin (Mikal) Doss, Mya, Amber, Justin (Angel), Jared (Dionnia) Houston; great grands, Donovan, Janice, Christopher, Chelsea, Hesley, Braxton Ware, and Aiden "Dancing Max" Houston; fifteen great-grands; three nieces, Mary Carolyn Wilson, Mary Francis Richardson, and Olivette Steele; a host of other relatives and friends; devoted friends, Summerlin Family, Flemming Family, Johnson Family, Shaw Family, Jade Sanderson, and the St. James Parrish Church Family. We have lost a pillar of the church. VIsitation will be held at Reese Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. Graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at 11 a.m. in the Plateau Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to the careful direction of Reese Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St James Major Catholic Church, 714 N College St Prichard, AL 36610
