James Lee “Jim” Sampson passed away Tuesday, August 18th, 2020 at the age of 90. He was the beloved husband of Shirley Sampson (nee Eckstein) of 59 years; loving father of Mark, Lori, Rick, and the late Terry; cherished grandfather of JJ, Todd, Nicole, Tony, Jessi, James, and Kaylyn; and treasured great-grandfather of 10 and great-great grandfather of 6.
Jim proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1945-1947. After his enlistment was up, he became a locomotive engineer for the B&O/CSX Railroad for 42 years. He loved being a “railroader” and was proud of it. His skills and competence as an engineer were recognized when he was selected to be one of the three locomotive engineers to serve on the 1984 Ronald Reagan Presidential Campaign Train, “Heartland Special”.
Jim enjoyed thoroughbred horse racing especially at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky. He was an avid St. Xavier Bomber football fan from 1977-2020.
Jim was always happiest around his family. He cherished the memories of the many years spent wintering in Florida with Shirley. He loved time spent with his children and grandchildren, sharing a day at the track, a good ballgame, a cold beer, and family get togethers.
Funeral Services are to be held at St. Joseph Old Cemetery Chapel on Friday, August 21, 2020 at 2:30PM. Social distancing and facemasks required.
