James Patrick Luhrs WEST ASHLEY - James Patrick Luhrs, 85, of West Ashley, the husband of Mary Skuhra Luhrs, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, November 28, 2009. He was born in Charleston, the son of Harry J. Luhrs and Mary V. Keenan Luhrs, on Monday, December 10, 1923. Mr. Luhrs graduated from Bishop England High School, Class of 1941. After graduation he enlisted into the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving our country as a Staff Sergeant during World War II. Mr. Luhrs went on to work for and retire from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 704, Elk's Lodge 242, SC Irish Society and NARFE. He was one of the first men to run the Cooper River Bridge in the 1950's. Mr. Luhrs was a consistent Hand Ball Champion for years and won many trophies in tournament play. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Mary S. Luhrs; two daughters, Patricia Luhrs Ludwick, Barbara Luhrs and two grandchildren, Allison and Erin Ludwick. The relatives and friends of Mr and Mrs. James P. Luhrs are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 Noon, Wednesday, December 2, 2009, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will be held in Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, December 1, 2009, at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy. Charleston.
