On the morning of August 31, 2016, James Phelan Lyons, known to his friends and family as Jim, passed away peacefully at his home in Sunapee, New Hampshire. He was 88 years old.
Jim was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary. He is survived by his three children, James Phelan Lyons, Jr. and his wife, Betsy; Katharine Lyons Beyerlein and her husband, Steven; Mary Lyons Dardani and her husband, Ted; ten grandchildren, Caroline Leonard, Rose Kress, Elizabeth Schroth, Lydia Beyerlein, Peggy Beyerlein, Sam Dardani, George Beyerlein, Matt Dardani, Ian Dardani, and Kess Dardani; and one great-grandchild, Emmett James Kress.
Jim was a graduate of Dartmouth College, Thayer School of Engineering, and Harvard Business School. He had a thirty year career in finance. He loved New Hampshire, especially the home his parents built, "Ski Inlet," on Lake Sunapee.
Jim was an avid sailor, skier, and lover of the outdoors. Some of the fondest memories many in the family have of Jim involve skiing at Cannon Mountain, where he and his wife Mary dated, and skiing in Idaho, sailing on Lake Sunapee, having 15-plus person dinners in his dining room where he always sat at the head of the table, or tobogganing from his porch to the lake on the track Jim had carefully packed down with snowshoes, "to make sure we would go fast!"
Jim will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Abbott Library in Sunapee.
I love you

One day in 1952 when I worked with a ditching crew in Manchester, New Hampshire, Mary MacLellan stopped by to say hello and to introduce me to Jim Lyons. I did not attend their wedding, but I much appreciated chatting with them. I'll keep them both in my prayers.

I will always remember 'Uncle' Jim's friendliness and generosity. We have so many great memories: celebrating Thanksgiving, learning to ski and sail.... He had a great life and made lots of others lives better.
He is in our thoughts and prayers.
