Hawthorne Funeral Home - Mount Vernon Obituary

James Glen Mainard
“Spoon”

Date of Death: September 7, 2025, in Sedro-Woolley, WA
Date of Birth: March 9, 1952, in Choteau, MT

Jim was born to Robert H & Mabel L (Thorn) Mainard Sr, the third child.  The family lived in Montana until the Anacortes Texaco plant was built.  In 1957 the Mainard family moved to the little yellow house on the hill on Peterson Rd in Burlington.  Jim grew up on the hill, playing sports, hunting, and having fun with all the Peterson Rd families.  In high school, Jim excelled in  football & wrestling.  He was a proud member of the graduating class of 1970, recently meeting up with fellow classmates to celebrate their 55th reunion.

After graduation, Jim attended community college until he received his draft letter for Vietnam.  Jim enlisted in the US Army and served 2 years at Ft Campbell, KY.  He was honorably discharged and returned home to Washington.  Jim worked for Hansen & Peterson Feed Mill, later purchased by Cargill Nutrina.  In October 2019, he retired from the Sedro-Woolley School District after a 23 year career, serving the staff & students of the district.  He was proud of his work and always said the job was never done until it was done right!

Jim married Melissa Ann Tregre on November 26, 1977 and together they made their home in Mount Vernon (but forever remained a proud BE Tiger!).  In 1979 they welcomed their first daughter, Kelli Ann.  In 1986 the family was completed when they welcomed their second daughter, Cassie Louise.  As father & husband, family was his number 1 priority.  But his greatest family accomplishment was when he received the title of “Grandpa/Papa”.  He was a proud “Grandpa/Papa” to Aaliyah, Connor, Landon, & Carrie, who he always talked about with such love and devotion.  Jim was always there for and did anything he could for his family.

In his spare time, Jim loved to hunt, especially ducks & pheasants.  His favorite experiences were taking his father & father-in-law to Eastern Washington for their annual hunting trips.  Jim & Melissa enjoyed their time playing softball and shuffleboard with their friends and their families where Jim was known as “Spoon”, a nickname that stayed with him.  But most of all, Jim was a faithful participant of Fantasy Football, starting his 50th year this month with his partners “Hooker” & “Toe”.  Every year he looked forward to his draft and the weekly meeting with his friends to bid on players, trying to win the end of the season pot, which he did several times.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Melissa; daughter Kelli & son-in-law Bill Waits, grandchildren Connor & Carrie, & daughter Cassie Gottier, grandchildren Aaliyah & Landon.  Jim is also survived by sisters Frieda Moore, Connie Nims, Bonnie Kyle, & Evelyn (Jim) Morse, brother in law Mark Tregre & a large extended family who he all loved greatly.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Sr & Mabel, in-laws, PJ “Bubby” & Gloria Tregre, & brother-in-laws Earl Moore & Jeff Nims. He was also preceded in death by his older brother, Robert Jr, exactly 5 months to the day of his passing.

A viewing for Jim will be held at Hawthorne’s Funeral Home on September 12, 2025, from 11-4 for those who would like to say good-bye.  A family burial will take place followed by a Celebration of Life on September 20, 2025, from 1-4 at the Burlington Eagles, 119 N Cherry St. As a tribute to Jim, please wear UW Husky or BE Tiger apparel.  Please feel free to bring a side dish to share along with special stories & memories of Jim.

Not sure what to say?

Spoon you were a great longtime friend and neighbor. From our days in Sunburst Montana, Burlington Wa and Mount Vernon Wa you were a great friend that was always there when you were needed. Then there were the most memorable days when we were teammates during our slow pitch softball days for Genes Tavern, Duffy´s and the Burlington Merchants. You were truly a great player and much respected everywhere we travelled. Your life was lived well and full of great memories. To Mellisa, Kelli,...

Spoonwill be missed,he was great to work with,RIP until we meet again. My Condolences to his family.

Heartfelt condolences to Jim’s family during this difficult time.

Mainards,

My heart is breaking for your loss. Although it has been a few years, I have never forgotten the deep love Spoon had for you and how he welcomed friends as family. He was full of wisdom, humor, and a good helping of sass (my personal favorite)! May his memory and spirit live on through Kelli, Cassie, and all his grandkids. My prayers are with you at this time. Love, Leigh Anne Rohloff (Powell)

My condolences to the family. I worked with Spoon at the SWSD , I appreciate his help ,humor and his integrity. Sorry for your loss .

Dad..
Although there was so much you still wanted to do, your time with us was cut short. I’ll focus on the amazing memories you were able to provide me, Cassie, & Mom. I couldn’t have asked for a better Dad or a better Grandpa for Connor & Carrie. I will miss you forever and love you always.

I love you Dad,
Kelli
