Not sure what to say?

I played two seasons of Good Counsel basketball for Jay Manning. It was hard because he was tough, but I learned much about basketball and life. If we weren't playing well, he'd say to us, "You're breaking our back!" These words were his words of encouragement. I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. In retrospect, he left me and my fellow teammates with a long, meaningful list of often revisited memories. May his family accept my prayers of sympathy and my condolences.

I've never gone from fearing someone so much in my life, to loving and respecting them so much. We were the bad kids in high school in the early 70's (not bad in our hearts, everyone was acting up back then), and I know we made poor Mr. Manning work twice as hard as principals these days. We'd run from him while skipping class, someone would yell, "Here comes Manning!!" But he'd just waltz over during lunch, and plop down with us long haired bad kids, and just start talking. Once we got to...

This man was special, terrifying at times but very special.

A life well spent. Mr. Manning was an imposing figure during my years at Fairfax High, and could be very intimidating until you got to know him. I can't say my getting to know him was necessarily on my terms (insert any number of reasons I "visited" his office over my four years there) but by my senior year I had found him to be a warm and caring person, truly interested in seeing his students succeed.

I never had Mr Manning as a teacher, but ran track for him as a soph at Good Counsel in 1964. He involved his athletes in his coaching - real good. My deep condolences.

mrmanning was a classic gruff-talking irishman with a heart-of-gold i'll never forget his advice in health class-"ea LOAVES of bread and POUNDS

simpler back in 1961

I remember Dr. Manning walking down the halls of FHS ('73) when I was a student; he was a sight to behold and the students loved him.

I have fond memories of Jay Manning from my days as a student at Our Lady Of Good Counsel High School class of '63.

Mr. Manning's gentle nature, warm smile and dedication inspired me in the classroom and on the gym floor. I thank God for his life. George Melchor, Class of 1966
