Not sure what to say?

After googling some of my favorite professors at UNCC, I was saddened to learn about Dr. McGavran.

As an English major in the 80s, I had Dr. McGavran for several classes and vividly remember his enthusiasm for both teaching and English literature (D.H Lawrence comes to mind).

After graduating from UNCC, I later contacted Dr McGavran for a grad. school recommendation and he was more than gracious.

I will not only remember Dr. McGavran as a wonderful professor, but as a...

I just discovered from Al at Christ Church that Dr. McGavran had passed away. He was the kind of person that never would die. He loved all aspects of life so much that it was understood that his love of life surpassed one's own love of life. I am overwhelmed to learn of his aneurism, the same as my husband's in 1996 when Lee was 48. I would like to extend my condolences to Deje and the family. I knew his as a professor and a mentor; I did a paper on Dorothy Wordsworth for my PhD at USC...

I remember Dr. McGavran coming to class with wet hair after a swim break. He was so funny and knowledgeable about his genre of literature. It's been 20 years since I took class with him but I remember him well and fondly. My sympathy is with you and your family.

jim's family,

I was a friend of Jim at Upper Arlington High School in Columbus, Ohio. We had a lot of adventures together, and I remember his good nature and his nice family. We sang together in a barbershop quartet called the "Uncalled Four". My best wishes to his family and friends.

Jim was such a delightful man! He had a kind spirit and cared for everyone. He was a true role model for our youth. He will be sorely missed by his UNC Charlotte family. Thank you for sharing him with us.

I was an accounting major at UNC Charlotte in the mid-1980s. I was thinking about transfering to UNC Chapel Hill, and was taking some upper level liberal arts classes to facilitate the transfer. I can still the books we read in Dr. McGavran's "Masterpieces of Modern Fiction." I made an "A," and he was shocked to learn I was an accounting major. I went on to law school, where the critical reading and writing skills he taught me were instrumental. Dr. McGavran was one of just a handful of...

Deje and Family,
Jim was a favorite of ours at UNC Charlotte. We loved his humor, his warmth as a colleague, and his talent as a teacher.
We shall miss him.

Deje: I had Dr. McGavran for 3 graduate level classes. Wonderful teacher and even better
Person. I, UNCC and our world will miss him
Terribly.

My deepest sympathies to Dr. McGavran's family & loved ones this Christmas. I was his student in my graduate studies a few years ago. He was an inspiring, challenging (in the best way), and kind professor. I hope to live up to the standard he set. My thoughts are with all who loved him. Melissa Mohlere
