James J. McGonigle of Morris Township, formerly of Chatham Township, died peacefully at home on November 29th. A private memorial gathering for family and friends will be held at a later date. Jim, a native of Pittsburgh PA, was the beloved son of John D. and Mathilda Schaefer McGonigle. He graduated from Central Catholic High School and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics from Duquesne University. In the mid-1950’s, he served for two years as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He was employed by US Steel Corp. in Pittsburgh as an Assistant Manager of Economic Research, Anchor Corporation in Elizabeth as an Executive VP, and finished his career as President of Jamison, Eaton & Wood in Chatham. He was also a Fellow of the Financial Analysts Federation and a member of Pi Gamma Mu -- National Social Science Honor Society. In 1960 he married Marlene Mary Fink (McGonigle), of Meriden NH, formerly of Erie PA, with whom he had three children. Later in life he married Martha Bowden of Savannah GA, who passed away in 2001. He is survived by his children and their spouses: Jay (and Lisa) of Alexandria, VA, Brian (and Hillary) of Marin County, CA, and Leanne Poth (and Matthias) of Frankfurt, Germany, and his two step-children: Melanie Bowden Simon and Dr. Walter Bowden, both of Savannah. He is also survived by his two brothers: Jack, of Spotsylvania, VA and Dan, of Sunset, SC. His sister Rosemary died in 2009. “Daddy Mac” also leaves eight much-loved grandchildren: McKenna, Evie Rose, Max, Joe, Sam, Finn, Brody and step-grandchild Marcos. Long will they remember his delight in their stories and accomplishments, and his gifts of mysterious coins from far-off lands. Jim was a loving father and grandfather, a lifelong student of philosophy, economics and politics, and a devoted fan of traditional jazz. He also appeared in many summer stock and local theatre productions, and was a member of the Amateur Comedy Club and The Lambs in New York City. Memorial contributions may be made in Jim’s honor to the scholarship fund at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh PA.
