Whitson Funeral Home - Cookeville Chapel Obituary

James M. McHenry passed away peacefully on April 21, 2023 at his home in Baxter surrounded by his family. He was born on August 3, 1934, to the late Ethel (Putty) and Bill T. McHenry in Putnam County, Tennessee.

Mr. McHenry is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruby (Mills) and three children, Gail Skoglund (Russell), Charlotte Stout (Thomas) and David McHenry (Penny). He is also survived by six grandchildren, Matthew Skoglund (Linda), Zacharie McHenry (Elizabeth), Christian McHenry (Jessica), Brandi Payne (Eli), Lauren Timmerman (TJ), and Isaiah McHenry, along with three great grandchildren and another one on the way.

He was proud to serve over 60 years as a 32nd Degree Mason, as well as a Shriner. He was of the Baptist faith. After his retirement as a Tennessee Tech Police Officer, he learned to play the guitar and enjoyed playing music with friends on a regular basis. His family and friends will miss his big smile and hearty laugh, his stories, and his love.

The McHenry family will receive family and friends at the graveside service scheduled for Mr. McHenry on April 24, 2023 at 11:00A.M. at the McHenry Family Cemetery in Bloomington Springs, with Pastor Bobby Davis of Life Church officiating. The grandsons will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in James McHenry’s name to Hospice of Tennessee.

Not sure what to say?

I have known James and Ruby since I was a little girl. He worked with my dad, Fred Bryant at TTU and they were good friends for many years. When I would visit my dad at work with my daughter James got to know her and brought her a Little Golden Book, which she still has 42 years later. He was a very good man and well liked by everyone. I will be praying for his family and friends.
