Many of us have happy memories of playing softball with Jim (and sometimes with Andy too) for many summers in Lehigh’s summer softball league. Our team (The Busters) was made up almost completely of faculty, and Jim was on the mound pitching just about every game. He was a very good athlete and friend.

I always looked forward to seeing Jim and his beloved wife, Sally. Jim was so interesting to speak with and learn from as we both would share information together. Sometimes it was academics, sometimes history, and still other times sports and athletics of which he was both an avid participant and an observer. It was truly a pleasure to have known him and help him over many years and I will remember his positive view of life, his courage, and willingness to help others always.

Jim was a wonderful renaissance man, always inquisitive, interested, and thoughtful. He loved his students at Lehigh, especially the pickup basketball games, and Commencement. I had the pleasure of taking care of him and Sally for many years at Dr. Raymond Haggerty's office as their dental hygienist. He loved his family, his work, and his community. He will be missed by all, especially Sally. Peace be with the entire family.

I have many memories about Jim I don't know where to begin. He was my sociology professor at Lehigh, and a good friend. We played pick-up hoops at noon in the Lehigh gym for years. He aways had time to chat. I loved Jim and he will be greatly missed. I treasured the times we had to share. Please know he was a kind hearted man who had time for everyone. Steve Shields
