TRAVERSE CITY — James P. Moening, 81, of Traverse City and Tallahassee, Fla., died Thursday, April 2, 2009, in Florida.

Jim was born April 15, 1927, at the family farm in Shepherd, the son of Frank and Eilah Moening. Jim was a Sergeant the U.S. Army stationed in Germany and France during WWII. On March 17, 1947, he was wed to Gloria Gonser in Lansing, and soon after attended Barber School.

Jim was a member of VFW Posts #701 in Lansing, #3308 in Florida, and #2780 Cherryland Post. He was also a member of the American Military League and formerly the Eagle Post.

Jim was a true family man, raising three children with his wife. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and traveling the U.S. He enjoyed his job and his life. He was able to make friends from strangers and was well-known everywhere he went.

Jim was always quick with a joke and a great storyteller. His friends and family will miss his honesty and straight-forwardness.

Jim is survived by the love of his life, Gloria Moening; children, Ruth Ann Coppler, Ila (Vance) Waite-Burns and Steven (Lori) Moening; grandchildren, David, Jason, Mike and Shelly; two great grandchildren; and siblings, Dortha Biondo and Melvin (Helen) Moening.

Jim's parents and five siblings preceded him in death.

Visitation will take place Thursday, April 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City.

His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April, 10, also at the funeral home.
