Not sure what to say?

My heart nearly skipped a beat today when I was in need of a haircut and walked down to see an empty shop with a now leasing sign. Due to COVID and remote working I had not been downtown in some time and had not heard Jim had retired. It was then I found this site and I am so disappointed I didn't get one last chance to wish him well in retirement. I had only gone to Jim a dozen times or so, but I always enjoyed the conversations we had, the stories he told, and hearing about all the people...

Jim was awesome, and greatly missed :( worked in the 5/3rd building down by him and loved to stop in and visit and chat. prayers for comfort and peace for family and friends. He was an awesome man.

Had great memories of playing racquetball with Jim for a number of years at both Unity Christian and Cornerstone University. Great times playing the game and listening to stories Jim told when we took a break between games.

Several months ago I called to make my usual long-overdue haircut appointment, only to find the number no longer in service. For forty years, from young architect to retiree, Jim was my barber and therefor my friend. Over that time I returned with hair much too long from Saudi Arabia, Zambia, and just down the street - because there was only one barber, Jim. To not hear "Hair Shop" on the other end of the line was disconcerting indeed. What a profound loss for us all! To Jim's family and...

Jim was our barber for many years taking care of all the men in my family. When I used to work in the 5/3 building and would walk past his window, he would always flash his great smile and wave. We will miss him. Vicki (and Bill, Andrew & Griffin) Hall

I am sorry to hear of Jim's passing. I worked in the same building as him for 30+ years. Every morning he'd give a wave as I waited for the elevator; always asked how my day was on my way out and always allowed me to place a Mitchell's Run poster in the window supporting his hometown Rockford's 5k event. He was quick with a joke and a smile. I'm saddened he didn't have more time to enjoy his retirement on the lake.

Jim was my oldest Brother ( half ) in that we shared the same Father and my memories of him in my life are all good. Our Mother would take us to see him for haircuts and he was always nice to us when we were kids. I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing and feel an emptiness that will remain for the rest of my life......Peace be with you forever more my Brother.....go with God and enjoy your Heavenly Rewards because we all know that you've well earned them.....I love you

I am also one of Jim's long-time customers at the barbershop. I started with him when he first moved into the Old Kent Bank building, so that would be 55 years. He was a terrific guy, so giving to the many people he encountered in his life. He was always willing to cut the hair of those confined to their homes. Yes, I too, was impressed with the time he spent with many young people in learning the art of pitching a softball. He was one of a kind and I will miss him a lot. Blessings to...

I swear Jim was my barber for over 50 years but as I sat in his chair for the last time on his retirement date he told me that it was not quite that many years. All I know is that Dean and then Jim were my only barbers since I moved here in 1965. In any event we had many years of great conversations, particularly about sports. Those that spent those many years with Jim know that he was a great pitching coach in softball. But, he was also great at trash talking as he and I would do...
