Not sure what to say?

I'm so sorry to hear of Dr. Phalens' passing. I was a Radiology Tech part time at St. Joseph's Hospital in the 90's. He was a very good doctor and will be missed. He was kind of funny, always calling me by my maiden name.

I was in Pharmaceutical Sales, and Dr. Phalen was such a likable and interesting person to be around. A great guy and physician.

I was a Medical student in the class of 1975. I was on a radiology rotation at the VA. My dad was diagnosed with lung CA. Jim became aware of my situation and immediately reached out to UCSF to arrange for my dad to get a second opinion, arranged for my "leave" to not affect my graduation, and than loaned me the money for my flight home. RIP, Jim, you were one of a kind. One of the best people I have ever known!

Jim was an amazing mentor to me in my early years of medical training, which will not be forgotten. He had an incredible "knack" for bonding with medical students like myself, which I have witnessed repeatedly. Why, I nearly chose a radiology residency as a result of my exposure to him in the magical "reading room" sessions I can clearly recall! I ultimately chose Internal Medicine as my field but he "one upped" me and went back and completed a medical residency later in hi career! I have...

I have fond memories of Dr. Phalen from medical school and residency at the VAMC. He was authentic, witty and funny. He made learning medicine fun. Always a bright spot in an otherwise grueling day. My deepest condolences to his family during this difficult time.

Dr Phelan was an excellent physician and person. I was lucky enough to train under him at Creighton and made medicine rewarding. I will miss his sense of humor and smile. He always made me feel included in the medical community as a student and resident. He will be missed...condolences and prayers to his family

Thank you for your Service May you be Granted an Honorable and Restful Peace

Sending my sincere condolences to all members of the family of Dr Phalen. May he rest in peace and may perpetual light shine upon him. Be assured of my prayers for all of you. Especially, Mrs Phalen my teacher @ OLL, and his daughters.

I think of Jim Phalen as a cross between a Renaissance man and Hawkeye Pierce. I picture him with his book bag slung over his shoulder dispensing knowledge to anyone interested. We worked together at the old St. Joe´s hospital on 10th St, what was the new St. Joe´s on 30th St, Bergan, and the VA hospitals. I will miss him as a mentor and a friend.
