James I. Riddell, age 81, of Swampscott, died Thursday July 29, 2010, at Salem Hospital, after a brief illness. He was the husband of Louise (Lyon) Riddell, with whom he celebrated 59 years of marriage on the day he died. A lifelong resident of Swampscott, he was the son of the late Charles and Anne (Turpie) Riddell. He was a graduate of Swampscott high school, where he was a member of the football team. He had a passion for Swampscott High Football throughout his life and had never missed a game in over forty years. He was also a member of the Swampscott High School Football Hall of Fame selection committee for many years. A Navy Veteran of the Korean War, James had served as a radio operator. He was the head custodian at Swampscott High School until his retirement in 1992 after over 30 years of service. He had also previously worked at GE and Essex Oil. He was full of life and radiated joy to all around him. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was a homebody and enjoyed his grandchildren. He was very proud of each of them and their accomplishments. He loved gardening, traveling, and sports. In addition to his wife he is survived by a son Charles G. Riddell and his wife Linda, of Danvers, 5 grandchildren Lindsey Riddell, of Boston, Cara Riddell, of Beverly, Jeffrey Cahill and his wife Renee, of PA, Joseph Cahill, of Middleton, and Jill Cahill, of Middleton, 2 brothers George Riddell and his wife Ann, of Swampscott, and Alex Riddell and his wife Mary Jane, of Sandwich, a brother in law Charles Lyon and his wife Beverly, of Peabody a sister in law Dorothy Allard, of Lynn, and many nieces and nephews. He was also the father of the late Donna Cahill, the father in law of the late Jack Cahill, and the brother of the late David, Charles and William Riddell. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday at 10am in the SOLIMINE LANDERGAN AND RICHARDSON FUNERAL HOME 67 OCEAN STREET 9RTE1A), LYNN. Burial will be in Swampscott Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Memorial visiting hour's Monday 4-8pm.
