During my high school years, I worked as his assistant carrying the plates for his Speed Graphic camera and flash bulbs. ( years before strobe lights). We would often arrive in the scene of an accident before the police or ambulance and rendered first aid to the injured. I fondly called him, Doctor Jim. As a professional orchestra leader, I would see him at every social event. He managed to be everywhere. I often wondered how he did it. I feel honored to have become his friend. A great...

I was a neighbor of Jim´s for 26 years. He was always a nice guy. After seeing everyone´s comments here it makes me regret not talking to him more and knowing him better. Rest in peace Jim.

I knew Jim for 10 years while working for the Courier-Life chain of newspapers in Brooklyn. His photos would populate the pages of the monthly Staten Island Star Reporter newspapers. He´d come in every month with his hard-copy haul - from images of white-tailed deer in Staten Island´s various greenspaces to photos of him with Willie Nelson from when he played Snug Harbor. The newsroom´s support staff spoke with him by phone regularly. He´d call up and, in a gravelly voice, announce, "Hiya...

I was a little boy and a hot summer night was interrupted by a loud crash. A car had slammed under a billboard at the corner of Hunter Avenue and Hylan Boulevard. My father introduced me to the photographer...Jim Romano. Rest easy Jim you've earned peace.

Jim was really the lifeblood of Courier-Life's Staten Island papers in the years I worked there, in the mid-aughts. His phone calls and visits were the stuff of legends. He would bring by prints of his photos for the paper and keep us updated on local happenings, and I went out on assignment with him on Staten Island to at least one very memorable gathering, I have the photos somewhere. My deepest condolences to your family.
