Jim has been a long time resident of Flagler Beach since his retirement from the Marine Corps in 1977 after 22 years of service. Lt. Col. Sheehan was predeceased by his wife Dorothy Olds Sheehan in 2000. He was commissioned in 1955 at his graduation from Worcester State University where he was student body president and where he still maintains an endowment for scholarships and academic achievement awards. He served as Officer Selection Officer for New York State and was then deployed to Viet Nam as a member of the Strategic Studies Group. Upon returning to the United States, he earned MBAs in both Financial Analysis and Computer Science from American University in Washington, D.C. He became head of the Systems Management Instruction Group at Command Staff College and Academic Officer of the Computer Science School. Returning to academia he attended the Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, VA where he was president of his class, and then became the Deputy Chairman of the Joint Planning Group under the auspices of the U.S. Army at The Pentagon in Washington, D.C. He was awarded the Legion of Merit at his retirement. Retiring to Flagler Beach in 1977 he was a volunteer in many areas throughout the county and for 32 years at the Flagler Beach Library. And in June of 2016 the president and vice president of Worcester State University came to Flagler Beach to present him with an honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters. Lt. Col. Sheehan has supported the high school seniors' scholarship programs for the Flagler Woman's Club, the AAUW, and the University Woman of Flagler for many years.
