Not sure what to say?

A gentleman and a scholar - Dear friend and neighbor. Beloved.

I had the pleasure of knowing Dr Shield while caring for his wife while she was still living at home. I am very sad to hear of his passing as I have thought of his often through out the years. He was such a kind man and always took me and Mrs. Shield on beautiful drives and walks through the garden. They will both be thought of fondly.

Dr. Shield was a dear friend to my parents. He would drive my father, Dr. Percy Wootton, to meetings of the Richmond Academy of Medicine and the Medical Society of Virginia. My Dad jokes that Dr. Shield was his "personal psychiatrist and chauffeur." When I was in college and thinking of a career in mental health, Dr. Shield graciously gave of his time to talk to me about his experiences as a psychiatrist. His kindness is much appreciated.

Dr. Shield was a great friend and a great leader in the field of Psychiatry. We miss him and send comfort to his family.

Dr Shield was a leader and mentor for many of us that had the chance to work closely with him. I know first hand how much he helped patients struggling with mental health. Memories of times together will add to a celebration of a life well lived.

My condolences to the family, friends, coworkers and so many others whose lives Dr. Shield touched in so many wonderful ways. I had the pleasure of meeting him while working in senior care management and he was more than kind and caring with clients. His knowledge and experience will be missed. Again, my sincere condolences. Janet L. Ziolkowski

My Sympathy to the family of Dr.James Asa Shield Jr.

Saddened to hear this. As an RN I had the absolute honor of working with Dr Shield Jr from March of 1976 until May of 2002. I can tell you his patients adored him. He was the gold standard in the practice. My deepest and sincere condolences to his family and friends.

We were blessed to know Dr. Shield and to learn from his practice of psychiatry. He cared for his patients as he would care for his own. We are sending blessings to his family of love and comfort.
