James Snyder, the son of the late Jimmie Snyder and Minnie Gillyard Snyder, was born in McClellanville, South Carolina on August 30, 1925. He departed this earthly life on February 10, 2022, in Moncks Corner, South Carolina.
Snyder, as he was affectionately called, attended the public schools in Brooklyn, New York. He served in the United States Army from December 28, 1943 to May 6, 1946 as a Heavy Truck Driver. He received an Honorable Discharge.
Snyder worked for the New York City Parks and Recreational Center and the New York Transit, retiring in November 1979.
He moved to Moncks Corner, South Carolina in 1996. He attended Greater Mt. Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church, McClellanville, South Carolina under the leadership of the late Rev. O. A. Gethers, Jr. Due to the distance, he joined Holy Comforter Reformed Episcopal Church in February 2003 under the pastoral leadership of the late Rev. William Butler, Jr. He served on the Vestry Board until his health began to fail. During the Sunday School Convention in 2003, James received a trophy for Senior Student of the Year.
Snyder loved church, Sunday School, deep sea fishing, baseball (New York Mets), wrestling and Gospel music. He would challenge you on things in the Bible.
James leaves to cherish his memories: his loving daughters, Barbara Snyder of Fairfield, CA and Martha Snyder of Bronx, NY; sons, Jimmie and Michael Snyder of Georgetown, SC; a very special friend for many years, Alfornia Berry; a devoted caregiver, Leola B. Johnson whom he called daughter; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, a very special first cousin, Elizabeth Snyder of Mt. Pleasant, SC; special and devoted adopted great-grandchildren, Malik Berry “Buckwheat”, Isaiah Berry “Muffle Jaw” and Tavion Berry “Tigger” of the home. He also leaves many friends who loved him dearly, along with the Holy Comforter Reformed Episcopal Church family.
Viewing will be held Tuesday, February 15, 2022, 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the funeral home. Graveside service will be held Wednesday, February 16, 2022, 11:00 a.m., at Holy Comforter Reformed Episcopal Church, 1685 Doctor Evans Road, Moncks Corner, SC.
