I first met Mr. Swafford when he rescued a barefoot kid from a sticker weed patch east of his house on Holmes Street. He lifted me up, picked out the stickers & carried me to a safe spot to be on my way. Decades later he visited my father's cabin at Hawley Lake. He impressed me with conversation about politics & World War II history. He also set up a portable ham radio system to talk with some Saturday regulars. How many of his friends knew he had contact with one of the Thor Heyerdahl...

A soft-spoken gentleman with endless patience with me as a little kid. Many hours were spent in the radio shack making contacts with hams around the world. Wonderful memories of time spent with a great neighbor...Thanks Mr. Swafford (I never called him Jim)
